An evening of Mathematics at Fylde Chapter

At its recent meeting at Cleveleys Masonic Hall, Fylde Chapter No. 2758 was delighted to have the company of Duncan Smith, North Fylde Group chairman, together with guest lecturer Dr John Walters.

After the regular business of the chapter had been dispensed with by first principal John Morris, it was time to invite John Walters to deliver his lecture entitled “Triangles, circles and the five regular Platonic solids”. The companions were treated to a feast of Mathematics and a comprehensive explanation of the symbolism associated with these objects.

This was a particularly enjoyable event for the third principal, Hugh Mett, as he had been taught by John at the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST) many years ago and indeed he had not seen him since his graduation day in 1981.

At the conclusion of the lecture, the first principal thanked our guest, who was suitably congratulated by all present in the usual West Lancashire manner.

Further praise was bestowed upon group chairman Duncan Smith, who had recently received the honour of Past Grand Standard Bearer in Supreme Grand Chapter.

Good humour and friendship were in abundance at the festive board which followed and a “Westhoughton raffle” raised £100 for charities. The final toast of the evening was delivered in fine style by guest janitor Bob Bennett.
