Biscopham Lodge No 7646 (pronounced Bispham from the ancient parish name of Bispham) held their Christmas meeting and festive board in November at Cleveleys Masonic Hall. The occasion saw brethren, their family and friends come together for the lodge’s annual Christmas social.
The lodge does not meet in December, the original reason has been lost over time but one explanation is that it was cancelled to enable the brethren to help their wives and partners with the Christmas shopping and preparations for the festivities. Like all Masonic myths it cannot be verified.
Whilst the members of the lodge held a quick meeting, the guests enjoyed a drink and a chat in the lounge bar.
After completing the lodge business that included a successful ballot for a new candidate, the guests joined the brethren in the dining room to listen to Martin Clements give a talk on his collection of Masonic watches. Martin explained that his interest in pocket watches came from watching old western films, as within these films the men were usually wearing waistcoats and they would produce watches from one of the pockets.
Afterwards everyone sat down to eat a fine Christmas dinner cooked by the in-house caterers with festive music in the background. Toasts being kept to a minimum, Linda Whalley, wife of last year’s WM Danny Whalley, responded on behalf of the ladies and guests thanking the lodge for a wonderful evening. A raffle raised the magnificent sum of £250 for Masonic and non-Masonic charities.
Biscopham Lodge is lucky to have a young WM in Kirk Elliot who has brought a new young candidate Benjamin Beckett into the lodge and who is currently enjoying his Masonry as a fellowcraft. Kirk was accompanied tonight by his fiancée Rachel and Benjamin brought his girlfriend Bethan who enjoyed her first time at a Masonic function, especially after winning a raffle prize.
The evening ended with carols and finally retiring to the lounge bar for further drinks and conversation.
